Everards Printworks, Bristol

AMA Studio were appointed by Design and Build contractor McAleer and Rushe (MAR) as architects for the delivery stages of the project. Situated in the hear of Bristol’s old town conservation area, the existing building consisted of 8 interconnected 1970s office blocks and 3 listed buildings / facades, including the historically significant Art Nouveau facade to the former Everards Print Works.

Retention of existing concrete frame and facades has allowed for relatively low embodied carbon for a project of this size.

The majority of the buildings were converted to create the 4 star 255 bed Clayton Hotel, whilst carefully considered contemporary insertions into previous external space have created new interlinked and engaging public spaces and 5 lettable public commercial units. Two of the smaller existing blocks were converted into blocks to provide 24 apartments for sale.

The listed facades were carefully restored and all 1970s facades were insulated internally, provided with new glazing and and over-clad in large sections. Single storey extensions to 5 of the existing blocks provide additional hotel rooms and hotel kitchen facilities.

An existing courtyard has been enclosed with a glazed atrium as the main focal public space in the Hotel, which has also created better linkages to the other blocks.
